Beverly Aiken Muhammad on Dr. Matilda A. Evans' Legacy
Beverly Aiken Muhammad, granddaughter of Dr. Matilda A. Evans, joins 101.3 The Big DM during Black History Month to share the remarkable story of her grandmother — the first native-born South Carolinian to practice medicine in the state. Beverly highlights Dr. Evans' extraordinary legacy: building two hospitals and a nursing school in Columbia, training interns from Harvard Medical School, and serving as the first Black woman president of a State Medical Association. She also reflects on her grandmother's deep community roots — from founding Lynwood Park and a water company to adopting six children and educating many others — and introduces the work of the Dr. Matilda A. Evans Educational Foundation, which continues to preserve and share that legacy today.
