Why the Water Cycle Is Important

The water cycle is an important Earth science process. It shows how water moves around our planet again and again. Water can be found in oceans, lakes, rivers, clouds, rain, snow, and even underground. The water cycle helps plants, animals, and people get the water they need to live.

One part of the water cycle is evaporation. Evaporation happens when the Sun heats water in oceans, lakes, and rivers. The water changes into water vapor and rises into the air. Next, condensation happens. Condensation is when water vapor cools down and forms tiny drops of water. These tiny drops come together to make clouds.

When the clouds get heavy, water falls back to Earth as precipitation. Precipitation can be rain, snow, sleet, or hail. After the water falls, it collects in rivers, lakes, oceans, and the ground. Then the Sun heats the water again, and the cycle starts over.

The water cycle is important because it gives Earth fresh water. Without the water cycle, plants could not grow, animals would not have water to drink, and people would not have water for daily life. The water cycle helps keep Earth healthy and full of life.
